On 26 March, BHP Billiton, the world’s largest mining company, announced that it “might” be interested in building a portfolio of potash assets. For the uninitiated, potash is a form of potassium that is used as a fertilizer, improving water retention, yield, nutrient value, taste, colour, texture and disease resistance of food crops. With the world’s population continuing to increase, and the industrialisation of BRIC and other nations, fertilizer is going to become an increasingly valuable commodity in its own right as the demand for agricultural land and supply of food crops becomes ever more sought after.
